Saint Sophia Cathedral

Here we are at Sophiivska square and this is Saint Sophia Cathedral. As you can see, the cathedral is very old. It was build by Yaroslav the Wise too. It is very beautiful, isn’t it?

In the summer this place is especially beautifull and sunny. There is always a lot of people at Sophiivska square in that time of the year, who came to see one of the biggest and the most beautiful cathedrals in Kiev.

In front of the cathedral there is a monument to Bohdan Khmelnitsky and a short street to Mykhailivska square with Mykhailivsky Cathedral.

Bohdan Khmelnitsky was a famous Ukrainian hetman - a general of kosaks. All his life he fought for the liberty of his people and finally has signed a union with Russia - the step he believed was the best at that time.

Saint Sophia Cathedral at reconstruction

The cathedrals are facing each other and here you can see how Saint Sophia Cathedral looked from Mykhailivska square at Summer 1998, during a reconstruction of the street. But now, when the reconstruction is over, this place looks much better.
