We'll start from the Golden Gates. They were build in
1037 by the King Yaroslav the Wise and served as a main entrance to the city until
it grows beyond the city moll.
But, as many other
monuments in Kiev, the Golden Gates were destroyed during the tatar-mongol raids.
The Golden Gates were reconstructed in 1982 when Kiev celebrated 1500 years from its
foundation.
Near the gates there is a monument to Yaroslav the Wise. King
Yaroslav was a great warrior, political leader and diplomat. He founded a lot of
cities, composed the first collection of laws in Kiev Rus and married his daughters to
powerful kings of Europe, - Quinn Ann for example was a wife of French King Heinrih I and
a regent of France while her son King Phillip I was too young to rule by himself.
He is holding a model of St. Sophia Cathedral,
which was also build by him. It will be our next stop.
